Diy Garden Border Edging: Step-by-Step Guide
The content creator provides valuable insights into building a garden border edging using roofing battens offcuts (if you want a more natural look, you can create a garden border using plants).
Listed below are the tools you will need for making your border edgings:
- Cut off battens according to your desired length
- Nail guns
- Electric saw to cut and shape the wood
- Sanding paper or any tool that can lightly smooth the wood
- A waterproof barrier
- A wood preserver and paintbrush
- Paint with the color of your choice
- A hammer to post the border into the ground
1. Cutting and Shaping the Battens
The first step involves cutting the roofing battens to your desired length.
In ensuring stability and secure placement, the battens must be shaped with angled cuts to form spikes that will be inserted into the ground.
2: Achieving Even Gaps
Spacers are used to create even gaps between each batten to maintain a consistent and visually appealing border.
This attention to detail ensures a professional finish for your garden border.
3. Securing the Posts and Battens
A nail gun securely attaches the vertical posts or spikes to the battens.
This step provides stability to the structure, ensuring it withstands various weather conditions.
4. Enhancing Durability
To achieve a smoother finish and prevent splinters, gently sand all surfaces.
Additionally, applying a waterproof layer at the back of the edging helps protect it from moisture and ensures it lasts longer.
5. Preserving the Wood
To further extend the lifespan of the garden border edging, it is crucial to apply 2-3 coats of wood preserver.
Special attention is given to the spikes in direct contact with the ground, offering extra protection against rot and decay.
6. Installation
To complete the process, firmly anchor the garden border edging by driving the posts into the ground.
For extra stability, some gardening enthusiasts might consider utilizing cement.
Adding an extra batten along the top is suggested for a cleaner and more polished border edge.

@homestyle_bycarly DIY GARDEN BORDER EDGING – STEP BY STEP I've been adding roofing battens to the pergola and have a lot of offcuts so I thought I'd make some border edging. It was so easy to make. It also saved me money by not having to buy something instead 😊 The garden is very much a work in progress but I love ticking little projects like this off the long list and even more that I was able to do it myself! I made 2 x 900mm wide ones for the front and then attached a batten vertically to cover the join and did the same at each end. Once the smaller side one was in place, I added another batten along the top to give it a neater finish. I've only staked them into the ground in case I want to ever move or change them but you could put them into a concrete base for a more secure structure. I'm by no means a builder or a carpenter, I just did what I could and what worked for me!
